About the data

Geometry: HydroRIVERS (© HydroSHEDS) — every US river with at least 500 km² of upstream catchment; flow direction comes from the network itself. Names: Natural Earth. Discharge: USGS Water Data API (parameter 00060, daily mean), measured where a gauge sits on the river, otherwise estimated from drainage area and nearby gauges. Estimates are drawn dimmer. "Flow vs normal" classes each gauge's flow against its day-of-year percentiles (USGS statistics); flood status in the panel is the official NOAA/NWS category. Dams: National Inventory of Dams (US Army Corps of Engineers), reservoirs with at least 12 million m³ of maximum storage.

Streamflow

Color and width = discharge (m³/s, log scale). Motion along the river points downstream. Pale lines are estimates from drainage area, not measured. The yellow line marks the river under the pointer.
