IN THEIR ELEMENT
Everything moves. Nothing moves alone.
One fish turns. The whole school responds. Beneath the surface, every movement is part of something bigger.
This is a site about the health of farmed salmon in Norway. Every week the farms count lice and report them to Mattilsynet. Every year the institutes add it up. We take those same numbers and show them as reported. No rounding, no smoothing, and each section names its source.
In 2025, 54.8 million farmed salmon died in Norwegian sea cages. That is a mortality risk of 14.2 per cent, down from 15.4 in 2024 and 16.7 in 2023. Fewer than before. Still 55 million.

Why they die
Injuries after delousing and infectious diseases are named as the most important causes of death in sea cages.VI Production grew by 200 000 tonnes in 2025, the largest one-year rise since 1980. Non-medicinal delousing rose by about a third. A marine heatwave sat along the coast through the autumn.HI
What it does to wild fish
Two of the thirteen production areas carry a high risk of lice-driven mortality in wild salmon smolt, eight moderate, three low. For sea trout and Arctic char the picture is worse: nine areas high, two moderate, two low.HI
The rule behind the 0.5 line
A site must keep fewer than 0.5 adult female lice per fish. In spring the limit drops to 0.2: weeks 16 to 21 from Nord-Trøndelag south, weeks 21 to 26 further north. Lice are counted at least every seven days when the sea is 4 °C or warmer, and every count is reported to Mattilsynet by Tuesday.LOV
Welfare, by area
The risk of poor welfare is rated high in every production area from the Swedish border to Sør-Trøndelag, and in Vest-Finnmark. Only Helgeland to Bodø is rated low. Submerged cages are in use at 40 of roughly 900 sites.HI
