THE OCEAN IS ALIVE

Everything moves.
Nothing moves alone.

One fish turns. The whole school responds. Beneath the surface, every movement is part of something bigger.

This is a site about the Atlantic cod in Norway. Every year the scientists estimate the stock. Every landing is weighed and recorded by Fiskeridirektoratet. We take those same numbers and show them as reported. No rounding, no smoothing, and each section names its source.

01 / THE SCHOOL

Shared water.
Shared data.

The cod does not stop at a border. Neither should the data. We hold three positions, and we build for them.

  1. 01

    Fishers own their data.

The boat makes the numbers. The boat decides who reads them, and takes them along when it changes vendor.

  2. 02

    Models must be auditable.

A forecast that steers a quota must show its code, its data and its errors. No black boxes in the sea.

  3. 03

    No lock-in.

Open formats. Open APIs. Any tool can read the data, and any tool can be replaced.

WHAT THE SEA HOLDS

Eighty years,
one stock.

The Northeast Arctic cod is the largest cod stock in the world. Since 1946 the scientists have estimated how much of it swims in the Barents Sea, and how much is old enough to spawn. Here is every year, as published.

WHAT THE BOATS BRING IN

Fewer fish.
More money.

Every landing in Norway is weighed and written on a sales note. Fiskeridirektoratet adds them up by species, gear and year. The cod catch has shrunk this century. Its value has not.

Landed in the north.
Counted everywhere.

Each sales note names the municipality where the fish came ashore. Cod is landed along the whole coast, but a few harbours in the north take most of it. Here is the latest full year, harbour by harbour.
